We specialise in video subtitling services and audio transcription of English and French spoken word to text to provide written transcripts or as a precursor to video subtitling.

Time coded transcription for subtitling

We transcribe French or English videos to text and create subtitles either via SRT file or embedded into the video.

This is a video subtitled by us which discusses the PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Assess) management method.

Transcription process

One way to subtitle a video is to transcribe the source language into time-coded text, translate it and then subtitle back onto the original video. Another is to transcribe directly to the target language – English.

Transcription can be one step: French video directly transcribed to English, or in two steps: French video first transcribed into French text and then translated from French to English.

One step French to English transcription

French video transcription direct to English. The output is an English transcription (time coded or not).

Two-step Transcription:

Step 1: Transcription of French video to French text, (time coded or not).
Step 2: Then, in a second step, translation to English.

Video Subtitling steps

There can be two outputs depending on whether we do just one or two steps.

If just one step, then we provide the French transcription (time coded or not). If we do both steps, then we provide both the French transcription (time coded or not) and the English transcription (time coded or not).

Subtitling software used

video subtitling services provided using aegisub
Subtitling grid from Aegisub

Above we were using Aegisub two subtitle videos but now use Subtitle Edit (below), which has better functionality, more shortcuts and a more intuitive interface. Other subtitling software includes EZTitles and Titlebee, but which require quite expensive licences.

You can provide us with a video in French or English, which we will transcribe into text and then create subtitles from the text to integrate back into the video. We can supply either the fully edited video with embedded subtitles or just the SRT file.

Herewith is an example of our subtitling work: this video is subtitled in English and the subtitles are translated to French.

Sources and output formats

We accept video or audio in any format on hard disk, key, optical, by transfer or FTP. We accept both Time coded transcriptions are normally delivered in SRT format.

Subtitling projects

We have worked for producers of documentaries for Netflix and French Television who more and more wish, or are required, to produce their material with subtitles. This is advantageous for viewers in France, but subtitles also allow French companies to export their material to English-speaking countries.

We transcribed a non-native presenter giving a conference in English. The francophone public wanted a subtitled video of the presentation to ensure that the message was clearly understood internally.

Subtitles are now also attached to video, increasingly for use by visually impaired or hard-of-hearing users. Subtitles are used to ensure compliance with EU legislation to provide access to hard of hearing and deaf people.

We deliver subtitles in SRT format, or incrusted into the video, are subject to estimate.
